Sometime past the 50th year of his career, alto saxophonist Lanny Morgan thought he might “retire.” It didn’t work out. Things kept coming up. So he removed himself from all the big bands around town and announced he was “semi-retired.” It didn’t work out. Things kept coming up—for the sextet he had launched and recorded in 2009 as “6.”
For the past few years, that partly re-staffed sextet has reentered the jazz atmosphere via scattered appearances, which turned into repeat performances, softly announced and generally not ambitiously promoted. Forget “retired.”
Now (2017), the Lanny Morgan Sextet is actively announcing performances throughout southern California-- with a first date in June at San Diego City College’s “Live Jazz” series, followed by three (so far) in the fall—in Northridge, Hermosa Beach and Palm Desert. More will be announced, as they say. (See Schedule for all details.)
The group consists of:
Lanny Morgan on alto saxophone, tenor saxophonist Doug Webb, trumpeter Bob Summers, Matt Harris on piano, Chris Conner on bass and drummer Paul Kreibich, delivering Morgan originals from the “6” CD, along with some new compositions and everyone’s favorite standards.
